Christchurch Pedestrian Bridge Project

This sensitive and very symbolic project was a special collaboration with the internationally-renowned, Kaikoura-based artist and sculptor Ben Foster.

It is worth noting that the structural engineer came up with one of the most mind-blowingly, counter-intuitive, and innovative ideas that we've heard in the last 25 years.  The challenge was to make the steel  monocoque structure robust, durable requiring as little maintenance as possible.  The engineer's idea was to use Corten steel for the facetted panels.  Corten is encouraged to go rusty like a ship's hull and protect it.  But Corten is not delivered in its rusty state.  So the innovative idea was to paint the smooth outside white, and allow the inside to corrode naturally and form a no maintenance durable structure.
